Why proper garment care matters

Every wrong wash strips a little colour, shape and life from your clothes. The good news is that proper care is not complicated: a few simple habits — separating colours, choosing a lower temperature and drying away from direct sunlight — prevent most of the damage.

At the Rizemize store, every fabric you see has its own care routine. Cotton, denim, wool, viscose and silk each want a different temperature, detergent and drying method, and those small differences decide whether a garment lasts two seasons or several years. Below we walk through the most important ones.

Before the wash: sorting and preparation

Sort by colour and by weight: whites, lights and darks belong in three separate baskets. Do not run heavy towels and jeans in the same cycle as thin shirts — the abrasion wears delicate fabric out long before its time.

Close zips, unbutton buttons and empty pockets. Treat stains immediately with cold water: a fresh stain almost always comes out, a dried one often does not. Fill the machine but do not cram it — clothes with no room to tumble neither wash properly nor rinse fully.

Wash denim rarely, and inside-out

Jeans do not need frequent washing — once every several wears is enough. Turn them inside-out and wash cold on a gentle cycle so the indigo lasts for years. Avoid the high-heat dryer.

If your jeans smell stale but are not dirty, hang them outside overnight; that alone often replaces a wash. For a local stain, clean just that spot instead of washing the whole pair, and dry them in the shade hung from the waistband so the legs keep their shape.

Knits and wool: hand-wash and dry flat

Wool and knitwear keep their shape best with a gentle hand-wash in lukewarm water. Never hang them to dry — the weight of the water stretches them. Lay the garment flat on a towel so it holds its original shape.

Use a wool detergent or a mild shampoo and never wring the garment out — twisting felts the fibres. Press the excess water out between two towels instead. Small bobbles on knitwear are normal, and a fabric shaver every few weeks makes the piece look new again.

Silk, viscose and linen

Silk and viscose want cold water, a neutral detergent and a short hand-wash. Do not leave them soaking for more than a few minutes, and dry them somewhere cool and shaded rather than in the sun so the colour and sheen survive.

Linen is more forgiving but creases quickly: take it out of the machine slightly damp and hang it at once so most creases drop out on their own. Wash lace, underwear and socks inside a mesh bag so they do not snag in the drum.

Ironing, hanging and seasonal storage

For shirts and blouses, set the iron temperature to match the fabric, and always press silk from the reverse side. Ironing while the cloth is still slightly damp works faster and puts less strain on the fibres.

Hang coats and jackets on wide, shouldered hangers and fold knitwear instead, because hanging a knit stretches the shoulders. For seasonal storage, put garments away completely clean and dry in a cotton bag, away from damp, and next year they come out exactly as you left them.
