Why sizes differ between brands

A "Large" can mean two different measurements at two brands. That is why you should not trust the letter on the label alone; the real measurement in centimetres is the only reliable guide.

The reason is simple: every brand drafts its patterns on its own fit model, and there is no single global standard. European, American and Asian sizing all start from different baselines, and even two models from one brand can fit differently.

Measure properly: tools and method

The only tool you need is a soft tape measure. Stand straight, let your shoulders drop, and hold the tape neither loose nor tight — one finger should slide underneath. Measure over thin clothing or directly on the body, never over a coat.

A second and very accurate method is to lay a garment that already fits you well on a flat surface and measure its chest width, waist width and length. Compare those figures directly with the product’s size chart — this leaves the least room for error.

What to measure

For tops measure chest and shoulders, for bottoms measure waist and hips, and for everything measure length. Compare these numbers with the product’s size chart, not with a guess.

If you are between two sizes, sizing up is usually safer — taking a garment in is easier than letting it out. For trousers, note your inseam as well; those few centimetres decide the whole look.

Know the fits: slim, regular, oversized

The right size is not the same as the right fit. Slim sits close to the body and suits leaner builds; regular allows some ease and is the most useful for daily wear; oversized is loose on purpose and is more a style choice than a sizing one.

Fabric affects fit too. Stretchy materials such as elastane denim or knits forgive a few centimetres, while non-stretch fabrics like linen and raw denim are exactly the number in the chart. Be stricter with that second group.

Read the product notes and the reviews

On each product page, the fabric composition, the model’s height and the size the model is wearing are valuable clues. If the model’s height is close to yours, the photo is a fair preview of how the piece will look on you.

Buyer reviews usually carry one crucial detail: whether the item runs small or large. If several people write that it comes up a size small, take that seriously — it is worth more than any chart footnote.

What if the size is wrong?
